Understanding Allergens and Allergy Testing

Allergens are typically harmless substances present both inside and outside your living spaces. These antibodies, when produced, instigate allergic reactions. Through allergy testing, we can gauge the amount of IgE antibodies present in your bloodstream, determining if particular allergens trigger your reactions.

Skin prick test: This method introduces a minuscule amount of allergenic extract to your skin. A tiny prick allows the allergen to penetrate, and if you're allergic, your skin will show a reaction, such as redness or swelling.

Blood test (specific IgE test):By analyzing your blood, this test quantifies the specific immunoglobulin E (IgE) antibodies your immune system produces in reaction to certain allergens. Elevated levels indicate heightened sensitivity to the allergen in question.

Patch test: Primarily used to discern allergens causing contact dermatitis, this test involves applying small amounts of potential allergens on patches, which are then affixed to your skin. If you're allergic, the contact area will show a reaction after a specific period.

Challenge Test:Carried out under strict medical supervision, this test exposes you to a suspected allergen, be it a particular food or medication, to confirm or refute an allergic reaction. It's essential for pinpointing specific triggers when other tests might remain inconclusive.

What is immunotherapy for allergies? It is a treatment that involves exposing the patient to small, increasing doses of an allergen to build up tolerance and reduce or eliminate allergy symptoms. Maya Medical offers allergen immunotherapy for various environmental allergies.

Environmental allergen immunotherapy has been proven successful for pollen allergies (including grass and ragweed), mold allergy, animal dander (including cat and dog allergies), house dust mite allergy, cockroach allergy, and insect venom hypersensitivity. Immunotherapy may also help prevent new allergies and stop the progression of allergic diseases, such as allergic rhinitis, eczema, and asthma.

There are two types of environmental allergen immunotherapy available at Maya Medical:Allergy shots (Subcutaneous Immunotherapy or SCIT): Shots are administered in a board-certified allergist’s office once or twice weekly, gradually increasing the allergen extract until a maintenance dose is reached.
Under-the-tongue tablets (Sublingual Immunotherapy or SLIT): Tablets are taken at home after the first dose is administered in the doctor's office. They are available for grass and ragweed pollen as well as house dust mites.
